Why Hardwood Flooring is Cooking up a Storm

Many people get engrossed in the prospect of their new kitchen design, and it is all too easy to concentrate on the position of appliances and style and color of cabinets.

A Step in the Right Direction

Some people are shocked to discover the cost of good quality kitchen flooring, and may find that they have not budgeted enough. But quality does not come cheap and choosing cheap kitchen flooring, or attempting to do it yourself, if inexperienced, may be a false economy. Think about the beating kitchen flooring gets compared with say, a bedroom, and you'll see that it pays to get something that can withstand heavy traffic and occasional accidents involving oil, heat, sharp objects, and staining foodstuffs such as red wine, beets, or chili sauce.

Kitchen remodeling catalogues are packed full of gorgeous designer ideas and storage solutions. Many people think nothing of commissioning cabinets at several hundred dollars apiece, so why scrimp when it comes to the flooring?

Hardwood Flooring

This is one of the many options that may or may not have occurred to you. Being made of hardwood, and properly and professionally sealed, your new hardwood flooring should withstand many years of use and still look great. The advantages of hardwood flooring include:
  • Durability. It is a much more robust material than say pine, a softwood. It will resist dents and knocks, although few floors can withstand the effect of stiletto heels, and some hardwoods are no exception.
  • Warmth. The feel of hardwood flooring is warm underfoot, a great bonus if you prefer to be barefoot at home.
  • Hygiene/maintenance. Hardwood flooring is also great from the point of view of cleaning. Spills don't soak in (provided it has been professionally sealed), and most times a quick sweep or vacuum does the trick to keep it looking good -- try that with a carpet!
