Why Add An Island?
Renovators Place Columnist
Oct 08, 2009
Kitchen islands have become a common element in today's
homes. After all, everyone knows that the party always ends up in the kitchen.
What better place to gather with friends than around an island with cherry
cabinets and a stunning granite countertop?
Islands are really hot right now and many renovators are
adding them to their kitchens to provide:
·
easier interaction with other people
·
additional countertop space
·
more room for eating and meal preparation
Conversation
Home
owners who spend a lot of time in the kitchen often like islands because they
allow easier interaction with family members and guests. You can communicate
with someone while you're facing the interior of the room. If you don't have an island, you're doing
food preparation while facing a wall.
Countertop Space
The
amount of countertop space also is important. Someone who likes to bake may
want an island with plenty of space for rolling out dough, for example. They
also may add different countertop heights or materials on the same island. If
countertop space is not as important, they may want to use some of the island
for a cooktop.
More Dining Area
Many
renovators add an island to provide additional space for meal preparation and
eating. You can pull up a few bar stools so the kids can eat breakfast there as
they talk to the person doing the cooking.
