Start by asking yourself some questions to help determine whether it is time to replace your windows and doors:
- Is there condensation inside the glass? This could indicate that the seal is broken. In this instance, you typically have to replace the glass or the entire window.
- How easily do your windows open and close? Are you forced to bang on them to get them to open? This is a common problem in old houses, as the window pulley systems often fail after many years of use.
- How is the noise level in your house, particularly in rooms with several windows and a sliding door? If noise is a problem, it might be time to consider installation of newer products with stronger noise deadening qualities.
- Can light pass through the window, patio door or front door perimeter? This could be an indication of a broken seal and energy loss. If light is passing through the edges, so is your heating and cooling.
- Is your front door sticking? This often happens with old wood doors, as they expand and contract with changes in temperature. Also, doors that have several layers of paint on them don't always function well.
- Are you tired of painting all wood windows and doors? While these types of products often look great, they require lots of maintenance. If you want a break from all the work, perhaps another type of window or front door is the answer.

- Ask for -- and check out -- references on the contractor who will be providing installation.
- In older homes, insist that the contractor "field measure" the windows by coming to your house. You might not have "standard" size openings, which will force you to order custom windows or use carpentry skills to help fill the gaps.
