Everyone has a remodeling budget, regardless whether you are starting a $100,000 kitchen remodeling or a $2,000 flooring project. The key to success with home improvement is to stay within your financial means.

Plan Home Improvement Carefully

Careful planning is the key to success with any home improvement project. From interviewing the remodeling contractor to ordering kitchen cabinets, be careful about your decisions. It's important to find the right remodeling contractor. You should look for someone with impeccable references who shares your vision for the project. Otherwise you risk:
  • Working with a remodeling contractor who is a poor project manager, which can lead to cost overruns. The contractor might spend too much time driving back and forth to the lumber yard, for example.
  • Working with a remodeling contractor without the proper skills. This can lead to problems with installation and having to redo work that does not meet local code requirements.

You'll want to find the right layout and design and will need to determine everything from the size of the kitchen cabinets to the location of an island. Lastly, you'll want to make smart decisions about which products to buy, such as the kitchen cabinets, kitchen sink and the kitchen appliances.

Avoid Major Changes Once Home Improvement Begins

Changing your mind about the kitchen sink or ceramic tile can create major problems that lead to cost overruns. Here's why:
  • A new kitchen sink might require a different size base cabinet, throwing off the kitchen cabinet design.
  • The kitchen sink color might not match your wall tile or kitchen appliances, leading to other expensive changes
  • The kitchen sink might require a different countertop configuration, leading to other fees.
  • A change in the ceramic tile might increase the cost of the material and installation. It also can cause delays, as many ceramic tile orders require a 2 to 6 week lead-time.

Once you've decided on the overall plan, stick to it and enjoy the home improvement process.
