Looking for inexpensive ways to spruce up your house for the holidays?
There are many Do-It-Yourself projects that cost less than $500. In most cases, the key is to focus on one fixture or one part of a room. Here are some ideas to consider:
Replacing the bathroom or kitchen sink.
There are many styles of sinks on the market, from basic white pedestal
sinks for the bathroom to shining stainless steel sinks for the kitchen. Many
are priced from $100 to $300.
Depending
on the configuration of your bathroom, you can replace the existing sink with a
different style without the expense of changing the room layout. If you have a
wooden bathroom vanity with one bowl for the sink, for example, you can replace
it with a pedestal sink in the same location.
If you plan
to keep the same faucet, make sure the new sink has the same number of holes
for the faucet to fit into. If you also want a new faucet, the total cost might
still be under $500.
The Kitchen Sink
In the
kitchen, look for a sink that will fit with the existing opening and match the
faucet configuration. By replacing a large single bowl sink with a double bowl
sink, you can add more functionality to the kitchen for $150 to $350.
Replacing the Bathroom or Kitchen Faucet.
If you are
tired of that faded brass faucet, replace it with a satin nickel or aged copper
design. Both finishes blend well with many room designs and can help create a
more up-to-date look.
It is important to look for a design that blends with the rest of the
room. If you have chrome towel bars in the bathroom, look for a gray metal
finish. For brass accents, try a muted brass finish, such as an antique brass
or copper finish.
Change Your Cabinet Hardware.
Cabinet
hardware is an inexpensive way to give your room a new lift. In the bathroom,
it's easy to get whimsical with bright colored fish, bold colors, or ornate
metal scrolling. In the kitchen, try adding hot chili peppers or a fork and knife
motif.
There also
are many hardware styles that are designed for bedrooms. A sports or animal
theme would work well for a child's room. An ornate scrolled metal design would
fit in with a den or study. Hardware is priced from $1 to $25 per piece, so it's
easy to outfit an average sized room for $100 or less.
Replacing a floor.
There are many styles of flooring, from vinyl sheet floors with natural stone patterns to laminate wood products in oak, cherry, maple or other wood species.
If you want a quick flooring project, stick to one room. A new ceramic tile or vinyl floor in a bathroom will add new life without turning into a week-long remodeling project.
When working on rooms that are more open, such as a foyer, you often have to replace a larger section. Otherwise, a new floor in the foyer will look out of place when it abuts the old floor in the hallway or family room.
Adding or replacing a
tile backsplash.
The kitchen backsplash area, between the countertop and wall cabinets, is a key focal point. By replacing or adding tile, you can add a new color or pattern for $150 to $400.
There also are many painting techniques that can add dimension to that area. A faux finish or a stenciled leaf design can change the look of the room.
Painting one item or room.
A fresh
coat of paint can do wonders for an old dresser, the kitchen or the family
room. Look for a bold color or consider using a faux finishing technique to
create a unique look. Even the most expensive can of paint will cost less than
$50.
By focusing
on one room or one project, you can easily update your space for a limited
amount of money.
