Looking for ways to save on your kitchen cabinetry purchase without sacrificing design? Stick with a stock cabinetry line and save $1,000 to $2,000. Then enhance the look by:
- Adding crown moulding to finish the tops. The cost? $250 to $500.
- Buying a cherry finish on maple cabinets instead of splurging for real cherry. The cost? An extra 10 to 15 percent of your cabinetry costs.
- Shopping around for cabinet and drawer organizers instead of paying the manufacturer's price. Those lazy Susan's and spice racks often can be purchased for less at a home center.
- Adding glass doors on your own. It will save you $50 to $75 per cabinet.
- Varying the heights of your cabinets. Two corner 42-inch wall cabinets will add an upscale look when combined with standard 36-inch cabinets.
- Taking a few cabinet doors off! Leave the space open or install a decorative curtain rod and fabric.
- Splurge on nice cabinet hardware. The cost? $1 to $25 per piece. In a typical kitchen, figure $50 to $250.
