Be Careful When Using
Space Heaters
Space heaters are responsible for more than 25,000 residential fires and 300 deaths each year, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Be careful of older heaters, as they may not meet new safety standards, such as having an automatic cut-off device.
Here are some safety tips from the CPSC:
- Buy a space heater with a guard around the flame area or heating element
- Keep the heater on a level, hard and nonflammable surface, not on rugs or carpets or near bedding or drapes
- Keep the heater at least three feet from bedding, drapes, or other flammable materials
- Never leave a space heater on when you leave the room or go to sleep
- Keep children and pets away from space
heaters.
