If you are facing an exterior home repainting, you might want to weigh the costs of this periodic chore against the one-time cost of installing maintenance-free vinyl siding. Vinyl siding is manufactured from colored PVC (polyvinyl chloride), so the color won't crack, peel, or chip.

Vinyl Siding: Do it Yourself or Hire a Contractor?

Vinyl siding is easy to work with, so lends itself to homeowner installation. If you install the siding yourself, you will be able to save a good deal of money. But if you don't have the time or you aren't that sure of your skills, then choose a contractor. Make sure you get references, verify licensing and insurance, and check with the Better Business Bureau.

Take the Vinyl Siding Plunge

If you have decided that you have the time and expertise to install your own vinyl siding, the first step is to measure the job. Measure the area of all your exterior walls, then measure all openings such as doors and windows, and subtract that total area. There are specialty construction calculators on the market that make this process simple. Purchase all your materials from your local home improvement store, or order direct from the manufacturer. Before you start your installation, carefully prepare the area, removing obstacles like trees, shrubbery, and downspouts. Carefully read the instructions that came with the materials, and go online to get detailed installation instructions. Make sure you have all the necessary tools handy, observe safety precautions, and most of all be patient.

When you are finished, you will have attractive, weatherproof siding on your home. And next summer, you can enjoy your patio with a barbecue and a cool drink while you watch your neighbor repaint his house--again.
