The days are growing shorter, and temperatures are dropping. Fall is here, and winter isn't far off. If you don't want to stay warm even on a cold morning, give your heating system a pre-winter tune-up. Some tasks you can perform yourself, but others are best left to the professionals.

Do-It-Yourself Tasks

  • Replacing the filter is a task you should perform on a regular basis. You should replace some filters monthly. Others are designed to perform for up to three months. Make sure you have a fresh filter at the change of seasons.
  • Make sure there are no drafts or air leaks around windows and doors. Replace weather-stripping and caulking as needed.
  • Install a programmable thermostat if you don't already have one. Programming your thermostat before your home is occupied can save one percent on your heating bill per degree over an eight-hour period.

Call a Pro to Check Your HVAC System

Inspection and maintenance of modern HVAC systems are best left to the professionals. Consider an annual maintenance contract that provides scheduled inspections, as well as emergency service. If your furnace is more than ten years old, you may save money, in the long run, by replacing it with a more energy-efficient, two-stage unit. If you live in a dry climate, your HVAC professional can install a humidifier on your system. If you or a family member has allergies, consider adding an air cleaner.

By performing routine maintenance and upgrading your system for efficiency and comfort, you can keep your heating bills reasonable and stay warm and cozy all winter.
