Here’s How to Save Money on Your Remodeling Projects:
Planning/Products
· Plan ahead – don’t ask a contractor to rush to pour concrete before the cold weather hits – or you’ll be charged accordingly!
· Shop the sales and look for out-of-stock supplies that are discounted
· Ask your contractor how to plan the project to save time and money
·
Select standard tile with an accent border of
decorative tiles instead of adding a wall or floor of designer tile.
· Look around at all your fixtures -- are they worth saving? Can you repaint, stain or sand them to bring them back to life? Try to save what you can and design around it.
Structural
· Stick with your existing floor plan -- don’t move walls or add on
· Work with existing mechanicals, if possible (Building codes and safety issues may dictate otherwise!)
· Do all or some of the work yourself, depending upon your skill level
· Scale down the size of the project
· Do the project in stages, if possible
Financing
· Take advantage of promotional financing offers (but remember to pay the balance in time to avoid interest fees)
· Shop around for the best rate on a loan/line of credit
· Consider bartering services (lawn care, household chores, etc.)with a friend or relative who is a skilled remodeler
