Preventing House Fires

Fires and burns continue to be the third leading cause of unintentional injury death in the home. Here are some tips from the National Safety Council:

Smoke Detectors

·         Add one on each level of your house, particularly near sleeping areas.

·         Test your smoke detectors monthly and replace batteries twice a year.

·         Encourage children to help test the smoke detectors. Familiarize them with the sounds of the alarm(s).

·         Also add a carbon monoxide detector or two.

Fire Extinguishers

·        Keep an all-purpose fire extinguisher in your kitchen (one rated for grease fires and electrical fires.)

·        Keep another one by the furnace, garage, and anywhere else a fire may start.

·        Make sure every able-bodied family member is trained and familiar with the proper way to use them.
