When searching for a deck contractor, think about your goals and the type of project you envision. Do you want a simple 12-foot by 12-foot deck made from traditional lumber or a more elaborate redwood deck with three levels?
Deck contractors offer a variety of skills, with carpentry being the primary focus. Some build standard decks, while others offer more customized features that are built from scratch. If you want a standard size and shape, then most qualified deck contractors will fit the bill. If you want a more customized deck, then look for a company with expert trim carpentry skills.
There are many contractors who build decks. The key to finding the right one for your project is to spend a little time examining the work. This way you can ensure that the deck company you select is right for your job.

Checking Contractor References
When interviewing deck contractors, many will show you pictures of their previous work. While this gives you a good idea of the style and quality of work, it is always advisable to see a few deck projects in person. When you do, look for:- A deck that blends with the exterior style, materials and colors of the house
- Railings, posts, floor decking and stairs that are level and installed evenly
- Properly installed joints--where two pieces of decking come together they should fit together without large gaps and overhangs
- Deck stains that are evenly applied
Talk with Other Deck Customers
When visiting a contractor's other projects, ask the homeowners how they liked working with that company.- Where the deck workers on time and courteous?
- Was the project completed to their satisfaction?
- Was the contractor creative when designing the deck or working around the landscaping?
- Was the deck complete within the budget and timeline parameters?
Deck Permits
Most municipalities require that you receive a permit before building a deck. This is an important step, as it involves the building inspector in the deck project and protects you against poor workmanship. Avoid contractors who suggest you proceed without a permit. There are many contractors who build decks. The key to finding the right one for your project is to spend a little time examining the work.
