The Stainless Steel Craze
Renovators Place Columnist
Oct 08, 2009
There’s
no denying it, stainless steel is “in.”
Once
the domain of industrial kitchens, stainless steel can now be found on nearly
all appliances including stoves, dishwashers, microwaves, trash compactors and
refrigerators.
The
trend is popular all over the U.S. due to the ability of stainless to
compliment a wide variety of kitchen designs. Designers favor it for its
unusual niche as a “non-color.”
The
stainless steel trend began with the use of commercial-style stoves in residential
kitchens. As renovators became more comfortable with its sleek and clean look
they began using stainless steel more liberally.
Heightens
Contemporary Look
The contemporary kitchen isn’t complete without at least one
stainless steel appliance, and often many of the appliances are constructed of
this material.
Stainless steel creates an urban, sophisticated look, and
its muted appearance blends well with minimalist design.
Stainless
Steel in Traditional Kitchens
It’s
counterintuitive, but stainless steel appliances, particularly stainless steel
stoves, work beautifully in traditional kitchens. Some renovators are creating
cabinetry “housing” – often in oak or maple – for their stainless steel
refrigerators to soften the look and allow it to more fully blend with the
other traditional elements.
Upkeep/cleaning
of Stainless Steel
Stainless
steel is easy to keep clean. However, unlike standard finishes, it requires
special cleaning techniques to ensure that it retains its unique character.
·
always
wipe with the grain
·
do
NOT use chlorine bleach or cleaning products that contain chlorine bleach.
For
daily cleaning and light soil, use a clean, soft cloth or sponge and a mild
detergent and water, or a solution of white vinegar and water. For heavier
soiling, use a paste of baking soda, rinse, then dry immediately.
