The Right Amount of Light in the Kitchen

When adding a lighting fixture, sizing is important. The fixture should be large enough to add the appropriate amount of light without appearing too large or small for the space. Most fixtures used on an island will have two to ten bulbs, depending upon the design of the kitchen.
While a fixture with one bell shaped light covering may be
large enough for a small island, most islands should have three fixtures. A
five-sided island with a cook top and seating for six could have three pendants
that each shine on a section of the island.
In a breakfast nook that is part of the kitchen, the fixture should be proportional to the size of the table. A table for four would have a smaller fixture than one with six chairs and heavy, ornate detailing.
Also:
- Fixtures
should be hung 30 inches above a countertop or a table
- Consider
dimmer switches to make it easier to control the light
- Change
the lighting to fit the mood – brighter for work, dimmer for entertaining
