Type of Material

Laminate

least expensive; lots of colors and patterns; easy to maintain

not as durable as stone or solid surface; can't use with undermount sink; will scratch

Solid Surface

(often known by one brand, Corian)

seamless, so it won't trap dirt; fairly stain resistant; can be sanded and repaired; Can make countertop and sink as one piece

can melt from hot pot; some consider the look artificial;

Natural Stone

(granite, limestone, slate)

rich look; hard surface that is very resistant to heat;

porous and must be sealed periodically;

$60 to $200 per linear foot for granite

Other Stone Tidbits

 

marble stains easily - not recommended for kitchen countertops

Slate is nonporous; scratches can be rubbed with steel wool.

Limestone

Engineered Stone (quartz combinations that resemble stone)

Can be more scratch and stain resistant than solid surface; Gives look of stone without upkeep

Can't be made with integral sink; Not as hard as stone

Butcher Block

Gives authentic wood look; Good for cutting food; Scratches can be sanded;

Needs regular cleaning and, with some woods, sealing to remove bacteria; Not typically recommended for entire countertop - try adding it in one section

$50 to $75 per linear foot

Ceramic or Porcelain Tile

More impervious to heat than solid surfaces;

Can chip easily; requires regular maintenance to keep bacteria out of grout

$10 to $25 per foot

Concrete

Hard surface that is resistant to heat; gives unique look; can be mixed in a variety of colors

Very industrial look; as porous as marble and should be sealed

$50 to $75 per linear foot
