The Latest on Bamboo Floors

Want to try a new and different
floor? Consider bamboo. This high quality hardwood floor is becoming the
darling of the design world. The reason? It has a nice look, a soft color, and is
a durable floor.
What Is It?
Bamboo is not wood,
but a fibrous grass product grown and harvested from bamboo forests in China. It
is cut into long strips and glued in layers to form an engineered product.
Because it is
laminated like plywood, it doesn't expand and contract with changes in
temperature and moisture. This means that gaps, cupping and warping are
less likely to form.
Color Variations
The plant grows
in segments with slightly darker patterns at random intervals in every strip.
Where to Use It
Bamboo
flooring is suitable for use anywhere in the home. Try it in a sunroom, a den
or the kitchen. Bamboo is
tougher and has more elasticity than oak, beech and other common wood floors.
It can be sealed, nailed, glued or floated over a wood
subfloor or glued directly to a concrete floor.
How to Maintain It
As with any wood floor, keep water away from it. Vacuum
the floor to remove any dirt before wiping with a damp cloth or mop. A diluted
neutral detergent may be used.
The Price
Bamboo is priced around $5 per square foot, making it competitive
with many hard woods.
