Taking an Inventory of Household Projects
Renovators Place Columnist

If
your list of household projects runs too long, consider taking it in stages.
Here's how to plan out the next several months worth of work around the house.
Set
aside an hour or two to create an inventory of household projects or to update an
existing list. Then grab a notepad and a pen and start walking around the
house.
Consider the Costs
As
you go through the house, you'll want to think about the cost of the projects. If
you are unsure, make a note to do some research into the cost. These figures
will help determine how much you do and when.
Look Outside
Start
on the outside of the house if the weather permits.
·
Look for areas to repair or to change
·
Check safety issues as well as cosmetic or lifestyle issues
·
Are there cracks in the sidewalk, wobbly stairs, or leaking
gutters?
·
Do you want to enlarge the family room or put on a new deck?
Think Landscaping
As
you look around the yard, think back to those sunny summer days. If your lawn
was overtaken by weeds, maybe this is the year to get serious about lawn care.
If nighttime visitors were always tripping on your sidewalk, perhaps some extra
lighting would help.
Check the Major Components
Your
inspection also should include the major components of the house, such as the
roof and windows.
·
How long has the roof been on?
·
Do you see signs of leaking in the roof or windows?
·
Are the leaking gutters funneling water against the foundation and
into your basement?
Get Organized
Separate
project ideas into two or three categories, such as:
·
maintenance work
·
quick weekend jobs and
·
major remodeling projects
If
you are detail-oriented, you will want to write down every project you see. Or,
focus on the projects you will seriously consider completing.
Once
inside, walk through each room and look at the floors, walls, ceilings and
windows. Look for cracks to repair, walls to paint or baseboards to nail in
place. Are there projects, such as new wiring or plumbing, that should be added
in several rooms?
Changes to the Layout
After
all the repair projects have been noted, consider the layout of your space. Think
about how you use the house and which rooms are the most important. Do you have
enough room for entertaining or the kids playroom? Would another bathroom make
life easier when guests visit for the holidays?
Also
consider the condition of your heating and cooling systems. Are they due for
cleaning or replacement?
Once
the list is completed, it will help to set it aside for a few days. Otherwise,
it can be overwhelming to think about all the work that could be done.
Remember, this is a wish list and you can decide how much to take on.
Set Your Priorities
When
you review the list again, divide the project according to priority. Plan
safety projects first; then large projects according to your budget and other
lifestyle considerations.
If
you want to expand your kitchen and family room, plan to have it completed by
September. If unexpected delays push the project into October, you will still
have time to paint and decorate before Thanksgiving.
