Kitchen Island Features

Kitchen islands have become all the rage. It's no surprise - they provide the perfect spot for:
  • Meal preparation
  • Convenience appliances, such as warming drawers and wine coolers
  • Family meals
  • Party gatherings
  • Homework assignments

Be Mindful of Island Layout

When planning an island, think about how all the features will be used. Make sure there is sufficient space between the island and main countertop, or any appliances. Consider:
  • Where a prep sink will be placed. Is there enough room to work without being too close to the main countertop area?
  • How far you would have to walk to reach the refrigerator or garbage can.

The spacing of the island is a critical decision. Be certain there is plenty of room around the island for traffic flow. Ask yourself whether there will be enough room:
  • To walk around the island if the nearby wall oven door is open.
  • For opening base cabinets, particularly those in front of a seating area.
  • For opening the dishwasher or warming drawer when people gather around the island.
  • For general traffic flow through your kitchen, particularly during parties.

How Much Space For A Kitchen Island?

A kitchen island can be as small as 2-feet by 4-feet, as large as 4-feet by 6-feet or even larger. The size and shape you choose should compliment your kitchen design and the way you use the space. For example:
  • If you want to prepare meals, you may need more counter space and room for small appliances and a prep sink.
  • If you want an island for laying out food, storing serving dishes and congregating during parties, consider a smaller space.

Before deciding adding a kitchen island, think about how your current kitchen design flows. Is there enough room for an island? Can you work comfortably around it, particularly when appliance doors are open? The list continues.
