Looking for plants that will tolerate shade? Here are some
suggestions:
Astilbe – blooms
in summer and gets plume like flowers in red, pink, peach or white
Azaleas –
blooms in the spring in a variety of colors -- from pink to salmon and white
Bigleaf Ligularia – bold
leaves and bright yellow flowers that look like daisies; blooms in mid-summer;
likes lots of moisture
Bleeding Heart –
blooms in the spring
Daylilies –
blooms in late spring to fall with bold red, orange, and yellow flowers
Hostas – blooms
from summer to early fall; gets tall colorful stalks
Lobelia -- blooms in summer to fall
Peony –
blooms late spring to early summer; does attract ants, however!
Primrose –
blooms in early spring
Sweetspire – shrub
with white flowers in early summer and green to burgundy foliage; great
burgundy fall color; only grows 3-4 feet
Tulips – plant
bulbs in fall for these vibrant spring bloomers
Also, try ferns, such as the Boston fern or holly
fern, as they add a nice touch of greenery to hanging plants, borders and
flower beds.
