Replacing kitchen cabinets can be an expensive and disruptive proposition, so consider refacing when remodeling your kitchen. You can reface your kitchen cabinets in many ways:

  • Replacing the doors.
  • Stripping and staining
  • Veneers

Each of these methods has its associated costs, which can run from as little as $1,000 or as much as $10,000 or more. Here are seven ways to calculate the cost of cabinet refacing and stay within your budget:

  • Determine if you want to hire a contractor or tackle the job yourself: Labor can cost more than the materials, so you can save a bundle by doing the work yourself.
  • Measure the area to be refaced: This is critical to determining total cost.
  • Determine the method you want to use: If you're replacing the cabinet doors, the expense will be higher than simply repainting them. Wood veneers come in a variety of grades and price and generally run from three to five dollars per square foot. Pick the best one you can afford if veneer is what you want.
  • Consider hardware costs: Hinges, knobs, and drawer pulls can cost from a couple of dollars to ten dollars each or more, depending on the material and style.
  • Do your research: An Internet search is free, and you might find some really good deals on materials, hardware, and new doors. But, remember that shipping costs can cancel out those savings pretty quickly.
  • Consider recycling: You may find some good deals on materials on websites like Craigslist, EBay, or even in your local newspaper.
  • If you use a contractor, get at least three estimates from companies recommended by a trusted source: Don't be afraid to negotiate price.

By carefully calculating the costs associated with your cabinet refacing project, the only surprise you'll encounter is how good your new kitchen looks!
