Selecting a Bathroom Wall Material

Wondering what material to use on your bathroom walls? The decision
depends on several factors:
- Your style -- ceramic tile can add a more dramatic look, but it is more
costly than a fiberglass surround
- Your
desire for maintenance -- ceramic tile requires more maintenance because it has grout
- The
overall look you want -- solid surface material adds a seamless,
smooth look; tile can have
lots of texture and an Old World look, depending on the pattern
The main choices in bathroom wall materials
are:
Prefabricated surrounds -- made of fiberglass, acrylic, vinyl, plastic laminate, or cultured (synthetic) stone. Before buying a one-piece surround, such as the fiberglass type, think about how you will get it in the bathroom. Are all your doorways wide enough?
The
only problem is …
This can be a problem in old houses, so measure first! Otherwise, look for one that comes in several pieces and can be assembled on site. Also make sure your walls are plumb and have been properly prepared.
Solid-surface materials -- just like you see on the kitchen countertop. These surrounds are smooth, seamless and are easy to clean. The kits typically have precut panels and curved corner moldings. Check with the manufacturer, however, about installation. If you have an odd shaped area or nonstandard fixtures, you might need professional help with the installation.
Ceramic tile -- is durable, waterproof and relatively easy to maintain. Tile comes in hundreds of patterns and colors, which can be mixed and matched to create a unique look. Because the tile has seams filled with grout, you risk dirt and mildew building up in those areas.
Other Tips:
- Make sure the walls are covered with a water resistant material, such as a cement board product (preferred, but more expensive!) or greenboard.
- The straighter the walls, the easier the installation!
- Seal all cracks carefully so that moisture does not get behind the walls!
