A single hole style
is a one-piece faucet with one lever to control the water supply. This is
the least expensive type of faucet and is ideal for secondary bathrooms
and those used by children. This style faucet, which is priced from $50 to
$300, is easier for children to operate.
A four-inch spread faucet
is made as one unit with two levers or handles to control the water and a
spout in the middle. There is a four-inch span between the center of each
handle. Faucet handles are shaped in many styles, from squares to crosses
to levers.
The third style has an eight-inch
spread between the two handles and typically is the most
expensive. Most faucets in this style are priced from $250 to $500, but they
can range as high as $1,000 or more. These faucets often are seen in
higher end renovations and semi-custom and custom new housing.
How to Choose?
Before you buy, consider your:
Budget --
eight-inch spread faucets are the most expensive
Tastes -- If
function is the key, try a single hole style; if high design is the word,
go for the eight-inch spread
The sink, of course
-- Many sinks have cut-outs for the faucet. Check to see what size it is
and make your selection accordingly.
Another tip -- If
the sink is a vessel or other style without a cut out for the faucet, look for
a faucet that is proportional to the sink.
