Shake Roofing

If you have a wooden shake roof, Mother Nature can do a lot to damage it. From water-rain and snow-that can cause rot and mold to ultraviolet rays from the sun, wooden roofs have to stand up to a lot. In order to keep them standing and prevent them from falling in, preservatives are a must. Typically, the preservative is applied after a roof is washed and any problem areas are addressed. There are two common preservatives, according to the Chicago Sun Times homes page, water and oil based.

Choosing Oil-Based Preservatives for Roofing Shakes

The Chicago Sun Times writes that it is best to choose oil-based preservatives in dry climates. These are areas where wood quickly looses its natural oil. Because of this, oil needs to be replaced. Water is not likely to make the cut in these areas. However, the newspaper also warns against certain oils. Be sure to do your research regarding oil performance. Buy only oils that perform well with the roofing shakes you have installed.

Choosing Water-Based Preservatives for Roofing Shakes

Water-based preservatives are still intended to hydrate wood, and they have some advantages of oil-based formulas. They are less expensive, and they are environmentally conscious. However, water-based preservatives typically have a poorer performance, according to the Sun Times.

Regardless of the preservative that you choose, the Sun Times advises that it is best to apply the formula with a paint sprayer or garden pump sprayer. No matter what kind of preservative you buy, be sure to carefully apply it using gloves and all other safety measures. Skimping on safety material and proper equipment ends up being very expensive.
