Clay tile roofing has been around for centuries and has been used all over the world. Though its popularity has been up and down over time, people are beginning to re-discover this as an option. And with the introduction of concrete tiles that have most of the same properties as clay, but are less expensive, more people are choosing to have this type of roof installed.
Cost of clay tile roofing
The cost of clay tile roofing is quite a bit higher than other types of roofing materials. However, you have to take into consideration the fact that you will probably never have to replace your roof. The most you may have to do would be to make minor repairs, but with proper maintenance of the gutters and flashing, this roof will last the life of your house or longer.
The average cost of clay tile can cost anywhere from $7 to $30 per square foot; tiles with custom glazing or shapes are the high end of the price range. A 1700-2100 square foot single level home could $11,900 on the low end to $63,000 or more on the high end.
Less expensive alternatives to clay tile roofing
Concrete tiles are a less expensive alternative to clay tile roofing. Though similar in many ways to clay, concrete doesn't require curing, so producing it takes less energy; this is reflected in a lower cost to the consumer. Concrete, like clay, is fireproof, weather proof, and more energy efficient than standard asphalt shingles. Concrete tiles cost from $4-$10 for deluxe styles.
Composite roofing is another affordable alternative to clay. It is made of synthetic materials such as plastic or rubber and is so similar in looks that it's difficult to tell the difference. The disadvantage of composite roofing is that it is not as long-lasting, only 30-50 years as opposed to 75-100 years.
