Replacement Windows: When Temperatures Drop

As you watch the autumn leaves turn just beyond your window, you're probably thankful that you can enjoy the season from your favorite cozy chair. That's what windows are all about - giving you a taste of the world around you from the comfort of home. Unfortunately, inefficient windows can fail you (and your energy bill).

Should You Consider Replacement Windows?

If you live in a climate that experiences extreme winter temperatures, make sure your windows were made to insulate. Older glass windows may not protect you from the cold. In a climate that sees single degree temperatures, ice may even form inside the pane. If you've been quite literally left out in the cold, install replacement windows.

Look for the Energy Ratings on Replacement Windows:

Although individual manufacturers often use different measurements to rate their windows, the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC), a nonprofit group of window manufacturers and experts, has standardized ratings. In many states, manufacturers are required to place a NFRC rating sticker on a glass window to allow buyers to compare the visible transmittance (VT), the solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC), and the whole-window U-factor. If the NFRC sticker is not available, you should ask the window's manufacturer for the information, or consult the Certified Products Directory (your window dealer should have a copy).

The NFRC energy ratings let you compare windows with confidence.
