To keep your lawn in top shape, you need the proper tools, and you need to keep them in tip-top shape. Here are a few tips on selecting and maintaining the basic lawn tools.

Your Lawn Mower is Your Friend

Regular mowing is required to keep your lawn neat and trim. A power mower is a time saver, particularly for large lawns. The rotary gas mower is the most common type, and it does a good job if you keep the blade sharp, the oil reservoir full, and drain all fluids for winter storage. Rotary power mowers come in all sizes, from the small 18" to large riding mowers. Select a good quality mower in an appropriate size for your lawn.

The String Trimmer/Edger is a Timesaver

To keep your lawn's edges neat, there are several tools you can use. Edgers come in both manual and power varieties. You also want to trim the grass around plants, shrubs, and sprinkler heads. A string trimmer, either electric or gas-powered, is the preferred tool for this task. Now you can have both in one handy tool, a string trimmer with a rotating head that doubles as a string edger. Keep extra trimmer line on hand so you don't run out in the middle of the job.

Use Lawn Care Tools Properly and Safely

Remember, working with power tools can be hazardous. When using a power mower, always wear proper footwear, preferably leather shoes with steel toes. Never reach under a running mower to clear out debris. When using a string trimmer or power edger, wear long pants, closed shoes, and eye protection. Keep children and pets well clear of the area when you are working with any of these power lawn tools.
