Mold is quickly becoming a concern in the housing industry, as more people become aware of its presence and the potential health risks. There is no need to panic, however. Small amounts can be easily removed.
Prevention is the best line of attack against mold. Mold needs water to thrive, so cutting off the water supply is important. This can be achieved through routine home maintenance and a quick response to any major leak. Take steps to fix any water infiltration problems within 24 to 48 hours. Also keep the moisture level to a minimum by using an air conditioner during warm weather and running a fan in the bathroom while showering.
Periodically check the following for signs that water is entering the house:
· Baseboards and other moulding
· Doors
· Roofs
· Walls and ceilings
· Windows
In the bathroom and kitchen, make sure faucets are installed properly and that any tile grout is in good condition. Check all toilets to make sure they are not leaking.
Mold also likes dark, damp environments. Use proper ventilated and lighting to help reduce its occurrence. Always turn on a fan when showering; open windows frequently.
Clean It!
If you find a small amount of mold and there are no signs that it has infiltrated a wall, the woodwork or other large area, use a bleach and water solution to clean it. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends using one cup of bleach for every one gallon of water.
Major Problems
If the problem is bigger, ask for a test by a company that specializes in environmental air quality control issues. Otherwise, you may open a wall and unleash the mold spores throughout the air.
Get several estimates and be wary of companies that use scare tactics to get your business. Also, make sure any company you hire is properly licensed and has adequate insurance in case the problems turns into a bigger problem.
