Kitchen remodeling is a big job and one that involves many options. As you prepare for such a project, think through all the necessary decisions. Do you want a hardwood floor and granite countertops? How about a double bowl stainless steel sink?
When selecting kitchen appliances consider:
Configure the Kitchen Design
The kitchen design is the most important part of any kitchen remodeling, as it dictates where the structural and mechanical elements are placed. Whether you are hiring an architect or having the remodeling contractor configure the space, you will need to know:- The size and shape of the kitchen
- The location of the kitchen sink, oven, dishwasher, and other appliances
- How the stove will be ventilated -- a range hood, downdraft, etc.
- Where lighting will be placed
- The location, size, and shape of an island
Select Kitchen Cabinets and Appliances
After the layout is finalized, you can start shopping for cabinets and appliances. Among the key decisions with kitchen cabinets are:- The manufacturer and quality of cabinets -- are you buying stock cabinets, semi-custom cabinets, or custom-made cabinets?
- The wood species -- maple and cherry kitchen cabinets are popular, but oak is a perennial favorite
- The cabinet door style -- high arching doors, flat doors, glass panels, etc.
- The finish -- natural wood, glazed wood, stained wood, or a combination
When selecting kitchen appliances consider:
- The finish -- stainless steel appliances are a popular item, but they are more costly than white or biscuit
- The quality - kitchen appliances are made in a wide range of prices, from economy models to those designed for culinary experts. If you are a serious cook, look for appliances with higher BTU and other options
Choose a Countertop and Kitchen Sink
The countertop and sink you select will have a big impact on how well your kitchen looks and functions. Do you like the sleek look of a granite countertop or do you prefer the more economical laminate in a stone-like pattern? Do you want a stainless steel sink or a large, single bowl porcelain sink?Study All Kitchen Floor Options
The last major decision to make is what type of floor you want. You can go with a hardwood floor in oak, maple or cherry. A vinyl floor in sheets or 12-inch squares has many patterns, and ceramic or porcelain tile floor in 6 to 12-inch sizes is another option. You can consider stone terra cotta patterns for a tile floor. There, of course, is natural stone, and you can choose from slate, limestone or tumbled marble.Start Your Renovation Here!
