Before starting a kitchen renovation, it pays to plan carefully. Here's a list of key questions to review with your contractor to help ensure the process goes smoothly.

- What decisions should be made before construction starts? There are several product selections that should be finalized before the kitchen renovation begins. Among the key home improvement product choices are the kitchen cabinets, appliances, countertop, sink, floor, sink and faucet.
- Why do I have to order everything before the remodeling begins? I still want to look around for tile and a countertop. Remodeling involves a series of steps and if you slow down one step it affects the next workers coming in. A change in the tile can throw off the tile installer -- and the carpenter and plumber, as they all work around the tile installation. The countertop affects the remodeling schedule for the sink and faucet installation. All these changes will affect the overall contractor's schedule and your costs.
- What can I expect from a noise, dust and disruption standpoint? Remodeling is noisy and messy, but it does ebb and flow. Typically, there is plenty of remodeling noise and dust when they tear out your old kitchen, then more moderate noise when they install the various home improvement components (cabinets, floor, etc). Your contractor should give you a rough idea of what to expect and how he can minimize it.
- How can I keep my small children safe during the remodeling? The bulk of the responsibility falls to you, but your contractor should make sure that home improvement tools and dangerous debris is cleaned up regularly and kept out of the reach of small hands. Also, the contractor should seal off the area and warn other workers that small children are around.
