Small Home Improvement Projects Around Kids

Large home improvement projects, such as kitchen remodeling or room additions, are difficult to manage with children in the house. Small projects, especially those that can be broken down into smaller segments, are ideal for this scenario. If you want to revamp a den or office in stages, consider this break up:
  • organize and clean
  • add shelves
  • paint and decorate

Avoid Opening Walls in Home Improvement

When working with a remodeling contractor, explain your safety concerns and get a game plan for keeping the house free of loose nails, wiring, and other dangerous items. With kids in the house, avoid these remodeling projects:
  • Major house rewiring or plumbing, which will tear up parts of almost every room and leave unsafe wall openings. The remodeling contractor may suggest you move out for a few weeks, if possible.
  • Home improvement projects that will leave doors, windows, and walls exposed.
  • Bathroom remodeling if it's your only bathroom.
  • Furniture stripping or staining if it uses chemicals with heavy odors.

One Room at a Time

Remodeling projects that focus on one room are relatively easy to do with kids. When the work is finished for the day, just close the door and keep the kids out. Also:
  • Look for home improvement projects that generate the least amount of dust
  • Have the remodeling contractor clean the area each day
  • Make sure the work area is secure and kid-proof

Among the safer options are:
  • Installing a chair rail in the dining room
  • Adding ceramic tile or decorative molding in the bathroom
  • Painting one room, assuming there is little sanding involved and the house does not have lead paint
  • Enhancing your kitchen design with new wallpaper, curtains and accessories
  • Bathroom remodeling that changes countertop, sink and faucet

With a coordinated plan and a careful eye on the kids, your home will be more enjoyable for the whole family.
