Pest control is an unsavory fact of life for homeowners. By choosing the best exterminator, you can eradicate a pest problem and take steps to prevent other infestations before they begin.
How to Choose an Exterminator
It can be tempting to simply pick up the phone and call the exterminator with the biggest ad in the phone book. But before you take that step, consider these tips:
- Look at the Value, Not the Price. Remember the old adage: You get what you pay for. Take a good look at what you get for the price, and you might find that more expensive companies are the better deal.
- Are They Certified and Insured? Certified exterminators are trained to follow safety guidelines and their insurance is meant to protect everyone involved.
- Hire Experience! Make certain the pest control company has experience in dealing with your particular problem. An exterminator who handles flying insects might not be able to handle that issue with bedbugs.
- Get Several Estimates. When you have a pest problem, you want to get it taken care of immediately. But don't move too fast! Choose several reputable companies and wait to compare their estimates before you make a decision.
- Check Them Out. Have you chosen an exterminator who seems perfect for the job? Do a bit of homework to be absolutely sure. Are they a member of any professional organizations? What does the Better Business Bureau have to say about them?
- Ask Questions about the Guarantee. It should set forth the methods and chemicals used, the time your contract covers, and what results you should expect.
Finally, trust your instincts. First impressions are usually right, so don't discount that feeling in your gut that tells you which exterminator you should hire.
