Padding, Fibers and More!

When selecting
carpeting, consider the "performance rating,” type of fiber and the
padding.
The “performance
rating” is based on three factors:
·
Weight
·
Twist
·
Density
Weight
The lowest weight
allowed by law is 24 ounces. The general standard is 25 to 29 ounces. The
weight can go as high as 35 ounces. But fibers that are too heavy may have
difficulty springing back; those too heavy and too tall require more
maintenance.
Twist and Density
The twist is the
number of turns for very one-inch length of carpet yarn. The density is the
measure of how close together the fibers are tufted into the carpet backing. In
both cases, the higher the number, the higher the quality.
If you're looking at carpeting in the same category or
comparing between two, the performance rating should be indicative of how it
will perform in most situations with good care.
The Fiber
Nylon is the most
common carpet fiber used and is considered tough and soil resistant. Polyester
is the softest fiber, absorbs color well and is less expensive than nylon.
Plush or textured carpet usually is made of nylon or polyester.
Olefin is a strong
fiber often used to make berber carpet. Wool is the most expensive fiber and is
considered a custom renovation option.
Fiber can be constructed in two ways-noncontinuous and
continuous fiber filaments. Continuous filament has a clearly defined finish
and is less likely to pill or fuzz. It typically will wear better and look
better for a longer time.
Padding
The padding that
goes under your carpet is an important consideration, as it adds insulation,
and can increase your comfort and the lifespan of the carpet.
Four to six pound
padding and a 3/8- inch thickness is considered standard. If you're only going
to stay in your house a few more years, the standard padding might be fine.
While upgrading the
padding can add more cushion to your step, don’t go too thick. A thicker
padding can damage the carpet yarns by forcing them to bend too much.
