Lighting Up a Kitchen

There are three main type of kitchen lighting – task, ambient and general or decorative. When selecting lighting, remember to think about function as well as design. You'll want coverage in these main areas:

The Countertops (Task lighting) -- fixtures that fit under the cabinet are a great way to focus light on the countertops. Among the types are:

·          fluorescent, which is the least expensive, but can give off a yellow haze;

·          xenon low voltage or

·          halogen lights, which can get hot if left on for a long time. Watch what you store in the cabinet above it!

Also consider adding canned lights in the ceiling above the countertop or the main sink. Just be careful that the light is not coming from behind where you'll be standing -- this will create shadows.

An Island (Task, General and/or Decorative) -- If you have a cooktop on the island, you'll want plenty of light, such as cans in the ceiling. For decoration, try dangling pendant lights over the eating space.

The Main Floor Space (General lighting) -- an overhead fixture is good for lighting a large section of the room, but will not help for close up work. Among the most common are rectangular shaped fixtures that use fluorescent light bulbs. For a more decorative look, try a chandelier.

The Breakfast Nook (General lighting) -- a dangling fixture over the breakfast table usually is sufficient.

A Desk  -- many kitchens have desk areas for paying bills, doing homework, etc. You'll obviously need separate light there.

Other Considerations

Also think about how the space will be used. Someone who hosts large parties may want lighting that is zoned and on dimmer switches to allow for flexibility in how the room is lit. Those who have small children will want to make sure there is enough light in areas the children will frequent.

Get Creative

Lighting can enhance the mood in a kitchen or help create a focal point. Among the options

  • Have an interesting painting to showcase? Add recessed cans that fit into the ceiling and illuminate a piece of art work.

  • Add lights above the wall cabinet so they shine toward the ceiling. This is considered ambient light and is designed to create a soft, subtle mood. Turn the light on to provide mood lighting during a party or leave it on overnight.

  • Take task lighting a step further and use it to highlight that stunning granite countertop. This brings out the natural fleck and variations of granite.

  • Add a dimmer switch to control the lighting based on your mood and activities.

  • Add lights to the toe kick or within glass cabinets.

Cost

Lighting is priced from $50 to $100 for a fluorescent ceiling fixture to $300 to $500 for a decorative chandelier. Plan to spend at least $300 to $500 on light fixtures (without installation) in an average size kitchen. If you skimp too much, you'll notice it each time you use the kitchen.
