Consider Kitchen Design Goals
Are you looking for a kitchen design with lots of splash or a low-key design that focuses on function? If you want a dramatic kitchen design, consider splurging in these key areas:- The kitchen cabinets -- splurge on cherry cabinets instead of a more sedate oak. The rich look often will add $3,000 to $8,000.
- A granite countertop -- this sleek, shiny stone will make a dramatic difference in any kitchen design. Granite comes in several colors, including black, cream and brown, some with speckles. Plan to spend $4,000 to $8,000.
- A commercial style oven -- this kitchen appliance is for the true cook or those who want to create a restaurant style kitchen. The cost is about $10,000.
- Decorative wall tile -- look for earth tone patterns with coordinating accent tiles. For an average size kitchen, the cost ranges from $300 to $1,200.
- A wood floor -- instead of oak, try Brazilian cherry for a rich red and brown look. The cost often is 10 to 20 percent higher than a standard oak floor.
When Function is the Key to Kitchen Design
If storage space is more important than a fancy kitchen design, try adding:- A built-in wall pantry for storing canned goods.
- Base cabinets with rollout drawers for storing pots and pans.
- Tall kitchen cabinets. Try 42-inch high cabinets instead of 30-inch or 36-inch cabinets.
- A large, double bowl kitchen sink for washing cookie sheets and large pots.
Review Kitchen Remodeling Budget
Before committing to a $1,500 farm sink, review your kitchen remodeling budget. If funds are limited, consider these products:- A kitchen faucet with a built-in sprayer. These are available starting at $100 and can make a big difference in your meal clean up.
- Crown molding to spice up the top of the cabinets. The cost often is $400 or less.
- Glass or metal wall tile as accents to mix in with an inexpensive base tile. The decorative wall tile might add $75 to $250.
- A few glass doors in the kitchen cabinets. The cost is $75 to $100 per door.
