You want a new kitchen, but your budget is a little lean? No problem! Kitchen cabinet refacing is a cost-effective way to make an old kitchen new again.
Kitchen Cabinet Refacing
You can handle a cabinet refacing project! It could be done in as little as a weekend. Here's how to begin:
- Clean the cabinets. Use warm water and a mild detergent. Remove the doors to make the process easier, and place them on a drop cloth to catch any mess. Make sure to number the doors so they go back in the proper place.
- Remove the hardware. Before you strip your cabinets, remove the hardware. Clean the pieces thoroughly and put them in a safe place until you are ready to reattach them.
- Strip the cabinets. Choose a chemical that is best for stripping the particular finish on your cabinets. Use an old rag for the work, and move quickly but thoroughly.
- Make repairs. Repair nicks, scratches, dents, and the like with a good wood filler. Allow it to dry completely before moving on to the next step.
- Sand it smooth. Sand down any imperfections to prepare the surface for paint or stain. Some paints "grab" better on surfaces that are slightly rough, so be sure to check the label before you sand the wood completely smooth.
- Paint or stain. Take your time when you choose your new paint or stain. Apply it evenly, following the label directions precisely. You might need more than one coat to achieve the look you want.
Cabinet Refacing Costs
Not only is cabinet refacing an easy way to update your kitchen, cabinet refacing costs are very low. You need very basic supplies and a lot of elbow grease to make the transformation. That's definitely easy on your budget!
