Kids and Home Renovation: Start the Process off Right

Before you can begin a home renovation project, you need to do some serious planning. Some of that planning isn't kid-friendly -- how much can you spend, what financing options should you consider. But plenty of it is -- should you add a new family room or a new bedroom, what colors should you consider. Getting the whole family involved might seem daunting, but the rewards are well worth the challenges. Here are just a few of the reasons including the kids in your home renovation planning is a decision you won't regret.

They've Got the Home Renovation Ideas You Need

Ask your kids about their ideas for your home renovation project and you may get some wacky answers -- what kid doesn't want a fireman's pole from his bedroom to the breakfast table? But you're also like to get some great answers. Who knew that a window seat would send your daughter to the moon? Who knew that your son would prefer it if there were more cupboards in the kitchen within his reach? Not you, unless you ask. Get home renovation ideas from your kids, and the project as a whole is more likely to meet the needs of the whole family.

If They Care, They Won't Complain

If you've taken the time to gather your kids' home renovation ideas, they'll feel invested in the project. That means that when the upstairs bathroom is out of order for a week or when the hallway smells like paint, they're likely to feel excited about it, rather than put upon. Sure, nobody loves the sound of power tools in action, but if everyone's on board, you'll all make it through the project together.

Home renovation projects can be fun, but they can also tax your family's patience. Start the process off right by including some of your kids' home renovation ideas in the mix, and you just may find the project leaning to the fun side.
