A fireplace surround sets the tone for a room and can create looks that range from rustic to contemporary to eclectic.
Among the choices in materials are:
· Wood -- can be rustic, contemporary or traditional
· Brick -- in a variety of colors, shapes and sizes
· Ceramic tile -- in a variety of colors, shapes and sizes
· Marble -- in polished or muted
· Granite -- in bold, shiny colors or honed stones
· Other stones -- limestone, etc.
When selecting a fireplace surround, the size of the materials is important. Larger tiles -- from 8-inches to 12-inches are fairly common as they add texture and dimension to the design.
Making a Pattern
There are many ways to create an interesting pattern on the fireplace surround. Consider using a texturized surface or one that has a raised pattern. Or, add a border around the fireplace opening with 4- to 6-inch decorative tiles, then use larger tiles outside of the border.
Other tips:
· The surround should match or blend with your door and window trim to add continuity
·
If the fireplace is visible from the
kitchen, blend the surround with
the kitchen cabinetry and floor
The Cost?
A fireplace with 8-inch ceramic tile squares arranged one-deep around the opening might cost around $4,000. The tile would be available in a matte or texturized surface. The cost for natural stones, such as granite, would be higher.
