If you've ever had a light fixture, ceiling fan, electrical outlet, or other electrical component stop working, you know how frustrating it can be to troubleshoot the problem. But, if you knew how your home's wires were connected, finding and fixing the fault might be much easier. That's where a wiring diagram comes into play.
What is a Wiring Diagram?
A wiring diagram is exactly what the name implies. It's a map showing how your house is wired. If you don't have electrical blueprints of your home (and few of us do), you can make your own wiring diagram. It will take a little time, but it can pay off if you ever need to troubleshoot an electrical malfunction.
First, check your circuit breaker box. If each breaker is labeled with the name of its circuit, you're way ahead of the game. If not, you have some detective work to do.
Make Your Diagram
Here's how to make your wiring diagram:
- Shut off each breaker, and note which light fixtures, outlets, or appliances no longer have power. It's best to have a helper and an outlet tester for this. Note the results on paper.
- Go into your attic, and locate all the junction boxes. Determine which box is associated with which circuit.
- Once you collect your data, create your diagram, showing rooms, outlets, lights, and appliances, such as dishwasher, clothes dryer, and so forth.
- Mark each circuit breaker with the associated circuit (i.e., "kitchen outlets").
- Put your diagram in a safe place, and remember where you put it.
With your wiring diagram in hand, finding and fixing electrical problems should be much simpler.
