How to Maintain Siding

Many homeowners turn to home siding because of its durability and almost maintenance-free qualities. Since it is an outdoor home improvement material, however, it is exposed to a variety of weather conditions. To keep your home siding looking new, follow these easy steps:
Cleaning
- Periodically spray exterior home siding with a hose to keep dirt from building up; wash annually with a soft cloth or soft bristle brush.
- When washing, turn off power to nearby outside lights that might get wet; close windows and doors; cover plants and shrubs; cover any surrounding brick facing to keep it free from runoff.
- Wash the bottom sections of your exterior siding first, then work up. This will prevent streaks from dripping down.
- Power washers can be used, but be careful about the pressure -- too much can damage the product.
- When using a power washer, keep the washer at eye level. If you aim upward, the water may collect behind the exterior siding, causing streaking or damage.
- Use ordinary dish soap or laundry detergent, mixed with water. Try cleaner on a small area first. Do not use undiluted chlorine bleach, liquid grease remover, nail polish remover, or furniture polish or cleaners, as they can affect the surface of the siding.
General Maintenance
- When completing outdoor home improvement projects involving stains, sealants or wet concrete, cover nearby siding to avoid potential staining.
- To prevent breakage and other damage, keep lawnmowers, bicycles and other outdoor equipment away from exterior siding.
- Keep vinyl siding away from fire sources, such as grills and patio torches, as it can melt or burn when exposed to significant heat. Also keep dry leaves, garbage and other combustible materials away from vinyl siding.
- Before painting home siding, check with the manufacturer. Many companies void their warranties if the material is painted.
