Want to save your furnishings and pay lower energy bills? Installing replacement windows could reduce your home's energy bills by as much as 15 percent. What's more, by choosing a replacement window with a low-e coating you could reduce the effects of harmful UV rays by up to 75 percent!

Here are some tips from the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) that will help you choose the right replacement windows for your home.

How to Choose a Home Replacement Window

  • Look for the NFRC label. The NFRC is a nonprofit organization that rates the energy performance of windows, doors, and skylights. The NRFC's distinctive label will provide you with third-party verified product and performance information which can help you to select the best replacement window for your home.
  • Compare window performance. On every NRFC label you'll find pertinent performance and rating information. The two key energy ratings are U-factor and Solar Heat Gain Coefficient. The U-factor measures the amount of heat that is lost from inside your home through the replacement window. The lower the U-factor, the less heat is lost. If you live in a cold climate, choose a replacement window with a low U-factor. The Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) refers to the amount of heat that comes in through your home's window. The lower the SHGC, the less heat will come in through the replacement window. If you live in a hot climate, purchase a replacement window that features a low SHGC.
  • Look for the Energy Star label. The U.S. Department of Energy has developed a designation for products that meet a certain level of energy-efficiency. Because the importance of a replacement window's efficiency varies greatly upon the climate you live in, you'll also want to look for the Energy Star label in order to ensure that you are choosing the right replacement window for your climate zone.
By taking the time to study the NRFC and Energy Star labels, you'll be well on your way to enjoying the financial benefits that come with installing new home replacement windows.
