How Energy Efficient is Your Home?

Ever feel like the wind is not only howling through the trees, but also moving through your windows? Here are a few test that will give you an idea of your home's energy efficiency.
Look for drafts around windows, doors and other openings. The easiest way to do this is to light a match in front of the opening on a windy day. When the flame blows out, look at what happens to the smoke. If there is significant movement, your weather stripping needs to be replaced.
Inspect the inside and outside of your windows and doors. Look for rotting wood, large openings and other signs that the seal has been broken. Add weather stripping where appropriate to seal any openings. Condensation or ice build up on the windows is a sign of warm air traveling outside and a problem with the seal. Use caulk to fill openings or, for large problems, consider reinstalling the windows or getting new ones.
Use a thermometer to measure the temperature in various parts of the house. The temperature should be fairly consistent throughout the house. A difference of several degrees indicates a problem. Check the temperature again after adding some weather stripping or other measures.
Also consider calling your local public utility company. Most have a system for helping home owners conduct energy audits to determine your energy loss and ways to fix problems.
