Home Improvement Planning: Peninsula or Island?

Before you remodel your kitchen, think carefully about the cabinet layout and whether an island or peninsula makes sense. Each has its own benefits, so take a look at your lifestyle and the size of the kitchen before making this important remodeling decision.

Kitchen Cabinet Layout The size of the room and layout of your kitchen cabinets often dictates whether an island or a peninsula is a better fit. Some layouts allow for either option, however. The key is to think about how you plan to use the space.

An island, by definition, is "floating" in the middle or near middle of the kitchen cabinet and appliance layout. It often is strategically located so you can easily reach the refrigerator and oven. Some islands also have sinks for meal preparation.

This type of layout works well for large families who like to use the space for cutting vegetables or laying out appetizers for a party. An island is also ideal for those who want casual seating in the kitchen.

Another Home Improvement Option A peninsula, however, creates a more private gathering space along one size of the kitchen. This can be a more quiet homework center for kids or a great "bridge" space between a small kitchen and a family room. While small kitchens often have peninsulas by default, many home owners prefer the extra kitchen cabinet space along one wall.

Remodeling For Storage If your main goal is to increase the storage capacity in your kitchen, either layout can do the trick. Many people outfit their island or peninsula with kitchen cabinets for added storage. Either layout also can accommodate wall cabinets with glass doors for showcasing decorative items.

In the end, the decision often comes down to your style and the traffic flow around your kitchen. If you want everyone to be able to gather in the middle of the kitchen, an island is ideal. If you prefer a more open center aisle and extra kitchen cabinets along the perimeter, then a peninsula is the best option.
