Home Improvement Financing--A Dream Home Nightmare?

With all the places you can find home improvement financing, it's not always easy to spot scams that could not only waste your time, but also your money. So how can you tell if your contractor is the real deal?

Don't Answer the Door

There are contractors who travel door-to-door to try and solicit business in person from unsuspecting homeowners who may be strapped for cash. If you want to remodel your home, look for a contractor who has a good reputation among clients as well as professional peers. A common home improvement scam involves a contractor approaching a homeowner and offering services as well as financing for the remodel. Most of the time, homeowners are not only duped into signing onto high interest home equity loans but are also left with incomplete or unsatisfactory work. While not all in-person approaches are scams, your best bet is to find home improvement financing from a lender you can trust, not one who is working in cahoots with a shady contractor.

Make Them Sign on the Dotted Line
Home improvement financing that is obtained through a contractor should be thoroughly investigated before you sign your name on anything. If you do decide to get home improvement financing through your contractor, ask for a written contract. Make sure you fully understand all the terms of the agreement and that your contractor legally signs on for his / her share of the responsibility for the entire remodel. Consult with an attorney to make sure all your legal bases are covered. This way, if a situation arises that you are not able to resolve amicably, you have a legally enforceable contract as proof of the builder's responsibility under the laws of your state. Any contractor who is unwilling to put its name behind its work should be kindly encouraged to find business elsewhere.
