The remodeling contractor often is the key to success with home improvement projects. There are many types of remodeling contractors and some that bill themselves as handymen. What's the difference and which is right for you?
A full-fledged remodeling contractor typically can handle all facets of a home improvement project or oversee the workers completing some tasks. While some handymen can complete large projects, many cannot or prefer to work on smaller projects.
There are many handymen who are well qualified to handle large scale remodeling projects. Conversely, there are remodeling contractors who can handle small jobs, but prefer to focus on more complicated home improvement projects. Ultimately, the choice will come down to finding someone who has the skills and personality to fit your project.
Remodeling Contractors Have Many Skills
A remodeling contractor will know how to complete (or supervise):- Carpentry - laying out and assembling kitchen cabinets, installing replacement windows
- Electrical - adding and repairing outlets, installing overhead and under cabinet lights, etc.
- Plumbing - installing the kitchen sink, faucet, and dishwasher
Handymen Are More Focused
A handyman typically will have one or more of those skills. Handymen often do smaller jobs than a remodeling contractor, although some are qualified to do more complex projects. Look for a handyman for:- Repairing kitchen cabinets
- Installing a kitchen sink and faucet
- Installing a kitchen floor
- Repairing grout and replacing sections of tile
Remodeling Contractor or Handyman?
When debating which type of worker to hire, consider the scope of your project. A remodeling contractor is better suited for projects that involve two or more trades and will last for two weeks or more. A handyman is better suited for:- Home improvement projects that are narrow in scope
- Projects that will last for a few hours to a few weeks, such as adding three replacement windows
- Projects that do not involve heavy demolition, applying for permits and zoning issues
There are many handymen who are well qualified to handle large scale remodeling projects. Conversely, there are remodeling contractors who can handle small jobs, but prefer to focus on more complicated home improvement projects. Ultimately, the choice will come down to finding someone who has the skills and personality to fit your project.
