A backyard deck provides a perfect spot for entertaining and informal gatherings. As you plan your deck building project, look for a unique design to set your deck apart from rest.
Also discuss with your contractor:
Plan Deck's Size and Shape
The size and shape of your deck can go a long way toward creating an interesting backyard landscape. If the deck is too small or too large, it will appear out of proportion with the rest of your house. If the shape is too square or boxy, it will have little "curb appeal."How Big A Deck?
Backyard decks come in all sizes, from a six-foot square deck to one that is 14-by-20 feet and hugs a sloping terrain. Look to the size and shape of your house and your backyard landscape for guidance. Also discuss with your contractor:
- Proportion--You want the deck size to blend with the visual weight of the house.
- The intended use--If you like to throw parties with 20 or more guests, you'll want a larger deck and one that has separate conversation areas.
- A design based on who will use it--A deck for kids could be more casual than a deck for adults who entertain.
Does Your Deck Blend In?
Ideally, your deck should look as if it is part of the house. This can be tricky with older houses, but there are ways to achieve a cohesive deck design. The deck on a one-story ranch should be different than the deck on a two-story narrow. Here are other tips:- If your backyard landscape slopes, consider a two- or three-tiered deck that follows the slope.
- Try curved deck stairs to add interest.
- Build your deck around mature trees that will add shade on hot days.
Add Deck Accessories
Another important element in any deck building project is the accents. Products such as outdoor lighting, built-in planter boxes and outdoor furniture can turn a mundane deck building project into a work of art. Also have the contractor consider:- Circular areas that wrap around trees.
- Built-in seats and benches.
- A bird feeder or bath.
- Space for a commercial grill, ice maker or other party accessories.
