Why not add French doors or patio doors to help integrate your interior space with the outdoors?

There is a wide selection of French doors and sliding patio doors on the market. From traditional doors with mullion cross sections to wide, open contemporary glass styles, there are door designs to fit any home style.

When debating where to put these types of doors, consider your existing outdoor access points. Do you have a small door leading to your patio or a closed wall section that would be a perfect place for new replacement doors? Does your old patio door keep sliding off its track?

Among the important features to consider are:

Insulated glass for energy efficiency
Head and foot bolts to keep inactive doors secure
Aluminum clad for low maintenance; bare wood interiors that can be pained or stained to match other trim
Arched tops to give added detail and blend with the home?s architecture
Doors that swing in or out, depending on preference
Rails, stiles and lite patterns that blend with accompanying transom windows or side lites
Ergonomically designed handles for ease of use

The cost of French doors will range from $250 for a 48-inch, unfinished pine door set to several thousand for a 60-inch wood door. Patio doors are priced from $800 for a 72-inch aluminum clad sliding door to several thousand for solid wood models. Installation is an additional cost.

Homeowners with carpentry skills can try tackling this installation job themselves to save the cost of a carpenter or handyman. This is not a job for a novice do-it-yourselfer, however.

Other tips:

Don't forget the door hardware, which can really set the tone for the room. Try trendy finishes, such as oil rubbed bronze, antique brass, and satin nickel.
Match door hardware with exterior lighting finishes for a coordinated look
Consider adding French doors between interior rooms to add character, separate the spaces, and enhance privacy. Among the options are the spaces between the foyer and living room or the family room and den.
