You're ready to replace the harvest yellow bathtub that's been in your home since the 1960s with something classy and contemporary. Or maybe those kitchen cabinets have got to go. Don't forget about the sink - it's about time you had a functional disposal. Whatever your plans, you think you're on the ball. The remodel is quick and painless, right? It's doubtful. Large home renovation projects rarely go according to plan. That's where a reputable home remodel contractor comes in. Hire the right person for the job, and your dream bathroom or kitchen remodel could become a reality.

Ask Around and Don't Rush

Word of mouth is valuable, so take the time to ask friends and family about their experiences with a remodel contractor. You can also check the Yellow Pages or The Better Business Bureau (BBB) Consumer Guide. Does your state have a licensing board for contractors? Ask the state attorney general's office or BBB to be sure; it's a great way to review on their licensing and insurance information.

Collect Bids, Check References, and Compare

Find a few remodel contractors and compare bids. What do they want for a down-payment? It's recommended you put down 20 to 40 percent - the lower deposits are for larger remodels. Ask for references and review what some of the contractor's previous clients have to say. Make sure you're impressed.

Organize Your Documents, and Follow the Progress

Keep everything: bids, copies of permits, the plan and contract, bills, cancelled checks, and supplier information. Keep an eye on the progress of your bathroom or kitchen remodel. Let your remodel contractor know if you have any concerns.

What If?

If you do run into trouble, don't hesitate to call the state attorney general's office or BBB for support.
