A new deck can dramatically transform your backyard landscape, adding extra entertainment and relaxation space. To ensure the deck is well-designed and durable check out the remodeling contractor carefully.

Get List of Contractors' Names

As you plan your backyard deck, ask friends, relatives, and co-workers for names of qualified deck contractors. Look for contractors who focus on decks and have years of experience in this area. Ask about their experiences and what they liked and disliked about various contractors.

Check Contractors' Expertise

Look for contractors with the following expertise:
  • Experience building decks, gazebos, and similar structures
  • General carpentry skills and a good work ethic
  • Knowledge of local zoning laws and building codes

Check Remodeling Contractors' References Carefully

Once you have a list of remodeling contractors, call them and ask to meet to talk about the project. Then request an estimate from the contractors who meet your criteria. Ask the contractor or an architect to make a drawing of the project to show its location, size, shape, and design.

Make sure to:
  • Give each contractor the same specifications--size, material and other details--so that you can compare the same specifications
  • Ask for three references--people who have completed similar backyard deck projects and will let you visit and inspect their projects
  • Go visit contractors' projects--look at how sturdy the deck is and how the deck blends in with the house and the landscaping
  • Ask for detailed cost estimates that include specs on deck building materials

What to Look for in a Remodeling Contractor

When interviewing remodeling contractors, look for someone who:
  • Returns calls promptly and is on time to meetings
  • Has creative ideas for shaping your deck project
  • Is able to solve problems and improvise when needed
  • Readily provides references and answers questions about past deck projects
  • Has built other decks that are sturdy, visually appealing, and that blend in with the landscape
  • Has good relationships with suppliers
