Fiber cement siding installation is not a difficult task. The installation process is more time consuming than installing vinyl siding, but requires less time than wood siding installation. With the right tools and tips, this is a project you could do yourself. However, professional installers are also an option.

Fiber Cement Siding Installation: Tips

Before tackling the installation process, be sure to read the instructions provided by the manufacturer. The installation process may differ slightly depending on the manufacturer.

Fiber cement siding can be cut using a circular saw. This method produces a lot of dust, but is most often used. Scoring and snapping is also another option. Simply score the plank with a utility knife, and then snap it apart. This technique leaves rough edges. Fiber cement shears are also available for making straight or curved cuts.

Fiber cement siding installation begins at the bottom of the house. The planks are attached to the house by placing nails into the studs.

If you chose pre-primed siding, painting is necessary. Purchase exterior acrylic latex paint that is guaranteed against chipping or peeling. One coat should be sufficient as fiber cement siding holds paint well.

Fiber Cement Siding Installation: Nailing It Down

Fiber cement siding is installed by placing nails into the studs of the home. It is imperative that the nail is driven one inch into the stud. By driving the nail too deep, the fiber cement siding will compress. By not driving the nail deep enough, the siding will not be securely attached.

There are two methods that can be used when installing fiber cement siding: blind nailing or face nailing. Roofing nails are placed at the top of each plank when blind nailing. As an alternative, siding nails are placed at the bottom when face nailing. Blind nailing is preferred since the nails are not visible with this method.

Fiber cement siding installation is a process that can be done with some motivation and knowledge.
