Fall Maintenance Tips

As the sun sets a little earlier each day, daylight hours are becoming more precious

As winter approaches, now is the time to perform routine maintenance projects; projects that could save you money in the long run and keep you organized for next Spring.

Windows and doors

  • Check the glass for cracks and the screens for tears. To defer some of the cost, save the new screens for your Spring maintenance list.
  • Most hardware stores will replace the screening; try a glass company for the window glass.
  • Make sure the caulking is intact.  If necessary, you can easily re-caulk the area yourself.
  • If you live in an older house and your storm windows are the type you have to put in yourself, also check the "seal" between the frame and the window. If there is a gap, add some weather stripping to reduce the air infiltration.
  • Check all doors that lead outside. Take out the screens, if appropriate, and install the storm windows. Add weather stripping where necessary, along any sides of the door where cold air can make its way into the house.

Gutters

  • Check for leaves, acorns and other debris that can cause problems in the winter
  • Inspect the gutters for leaks or damages while you are cleaning them

Insulation

  • Does the space over an unfinished basement or crawl space get cold in the winter?
  • Do you have a bedroom over a garage? What about the attic? If so, check the insulation.

If there is no insulation, get some and install it according to the instructions. (See related story in this section) Make sure it adequately covers all necessary areas. Be sure to wears gloves, long-sleeve apparel and masks when working with insulation. The fiberglass composition of the insulation can cause respiratory discomfort.

Keep Away Critters

Walk the perimeter of the house to make sure that there are no places for friendly critters to take up residence as the weather gets colder. Now is the time of year when skunks, opossums and raccoons may seek a warm place for the winter.

Other Tips:

  • Install new light bulbs so that you will not have to bear the brunt of the winter elements when the motion detector lights burn out in January
  • Check fans and vents to make sure you have not added a family of birds, or a nest for the winter.
